The AD8233 is an integrated signal conditioning module for electrocardiography (ECG) and other biopotential measurement applications. The device is designed to extract, amplify, and filter weak bioelectrical signals in the presence of noise from motion or remote electrode placement. The design enables an ultra-low power analog-to-digital converter (ADC) or embedded microcontroller to easily acquire the output signal.

The AD8233 uses a two-pole high-pass filter to remove motion artifacts and electrode half-cell potential. The filter is tightly coupled to the instrumentation amplifier structure to achieve single-stage high-gain and high-pass filtering, saving space and cost.

The AD8233 uses an unused op amp to create a three-pole low-pass filter that removes additional noise. Users can select the cutoff frequency of all filters to meet the needs of different types of applications.

To improve common-mode rejection at system line frequencies and other unwanted interferers, the AD8233 includes a right leg drive (RLD) amplifier for driven electrode applications. The AD8233 includes a fast recovery feature that reduces the otherwise long settling tail of the high-pass filter. If there is a sudden signal change in the amplifier rail voltage (such as a lead-off condition), the AD8233 will automatically adjust to a higher filter cutoff state. This feature allows the AD8233 to recover quickly so that valid measurements can be obtained as soon as possible after the leads are connected to the electrodes of the subject of measurement.

The AD8233 is available in a 2 mm × 1.7 mm, 20-lead WLCSP package with a thin 150 μm die for height constrained applications. It is rated from 0°C to 70°C and can operate from -40°C to +85°C.
